In Nauru, there is one main general store and a few smaller kiosk-type shops with food, soft drinks etc. Shipments come in weekly, and you can find what is available that week after checking 2 or 3 of them. Some items are better priced at one store over the other. I stopped at my second store of the afternoon in hopes of finding some apples that were reasonably fresh. They are kept in refrigeration and in order to open the frig I had to move a box away from the door. To my surprise from behind that box scampered a family of mice. No one in the shop, except me and the mice, seemed to be alarmed. Bread is kept in the freezer section, which I thought was reasonable since the climate here is so warm and humid. However, I noted on each of the loaves, the "best if used by" date was August 28. Optimistically, I figure it won't take so long to toast or make croutons ... and no, there is no Walmart in Nauru.

  2. "Best if used by" is really just a suggestion.

  5. Well here I am and I have not posted in a while. Not because you are not in my thoughts daily... just been busy and have not taken the time to sit down and type! Hold on, Savannah just walked by and said that she loves you and misses you. Ok now back to our wonderfully exciting life... lets see. We have had something every weekend in October. Last night was the Harvest Party at church, and we had 34 on our bus from Gardner that we brought in. They were fairly well behaved by all standards. Lots of candy and giggling, but I really do enjoy the kids. The weekend before was Maple Leaf and the schools family fun night to which we did not attend as we had our own family fun night with my brother and his family. The weekend before that was the adult hay ride and weiny roast and I cannot remember further back than that.....Well James has now gotten three detentions, but oddly enough on his report card he has been shown to be doing "G" or Good in all of his character traits. Figure that out? Following directions, good; Uses time wisely, Good. Now we all know James has a little bit of an issue with being impulsive. Anyway, his grades are good and he does his scripture daily....Savannah is doing excellent as figured. She really is excelling in her literature and creative writing. I found her the other day singing and dancing in her room to music reminding me of myself at the age (or was it yesterday :)) that I was doing the same thing. Michael is really showing growth in all areas. He is doing his scripture daily at school and working hard at his work and is on schedule to graduate on time. He was behind in his work, but no longer :). Lance and I are just coasting along. I am slowling getting things to change my home decor. Going to a home decorating party (to which for those who know me, knows this something I do not do) but it is for a friend of mine at church, so I will go. Maybe I will find something to treat myself :). Lance is doing more work at home working on three bids for NC. My work, unfortunately is still the same. The weather has been gray and rainy more than sunny, but today the sun is out and really a chill in the air this morning. Waking up and being thankful for God's strength to do something for Him everyday. We love you dearly, and pray for you every day. XOXOX!
